The great composer died on December 5, 1791, at the age of 35. The cause of his death has been a mystery ever since.

There are numerous tales, stories, and conjectures about the manner and cause of his passing. Mozart himself is said to have had a strong feeling that he was being poisoned. "I cannot rid myself of this idea," he has been quoted as saying. Other possibilities that have been advanced include intestinal parasites from undercooked pork and streptococcal infection leading to kidney failure.

What is agreed upon is that from the second half of November 1791, until his death in December, he was very ill, indeed. Mozart's oldest son, Karl, who was present at his death, related later that there was so much internal decomposition of the body that an autopsy was impossible.
