If someone says that they just ate Goober Peas what are they referring to?
The term Goober Peas was made popular by a song that was sung during the American Civil War.
The song was about hard times in the south and how they survived by eating boiled peanuts known as Goober Peas. Boiled peanuts are still popular in the southern states but they are not called Goober Peas very often. Peanuts are grown mainly in the southern U.S. and for this reason they were a staple in the Confederate Army's diet.

I live in South Carolina and live in peanut country. Goober peas are not boiled peanuts. They are peanuts , plane, roasted, boiled or you should try them deep fried in the shell. The proper way to boil peanuts is get them very young and boil them in very salty water so you can eat them shell and all. Just like the fried peanuts. Canned boiled peanuts just don't cut it. There are two ripe. Just saying YALL

Fred Zeb Fudpucker, being from the north you probably ate the sorry canned boil peanuts. You need to come down to South Carolina and have a good old fashion peanut boil where we boil the peanuts in a big black pot outside drink beer and tell lies. We pulled them out of the ground. Wash them off throw them in the black pot of water and put two cans of salt in it. That will make you drink a lot of beer. Salted boiled peanuts. Can't beat them

Trust me. Born in Alabama, living in Louisiana, Goober peas are peanuts in ANY form, not just boiled. The Confederate army had a song about how tired of eating them they had become:
Sitting by the roadside on a summer's day
Chatting with my mess-mates, passing time away
Lying in the shadows underneath the trees
Goodness, how delicious, eating goober peas.
Peas, peas, peas, peas
Eating goober peas
Goodness, how delicious,
Eating goober peas.
When a horse-man passes, the soldiers have a rule
To cry out their loudest, "Mister, here's your mule!"
But another custom, enchanting-er than these
Is wearing out your grinders, eating goober peas.
Peas, peas, peas, peas
Eating goober peas
Goodness, how delicious,
Eating goober peas.
Just before the battle, the General hears a row
He says "The Yanks are coming, I hear their rifles now."
He looks down the roadway, and what d'ya think he sees?
The Georgia Militia cracking goober peas.
Peas, peas, peas, peas
Eating goober peas
Goodness, how delicious,
Eating goober peas.
I think my song has lasted just about enough.
The subject is interesting, but the rhymes are mighty rough.
I wish the war was over, so free from rags and fleas
We'd kiss our wives and sweethearts, say good-bye to goober peas.
Peas, peas, peas, peas
Eating goober peas
Goodness, how delicious,
Eating goober peas.

Trudy Berggren Rahm, Oh honey, I didn't either until I stopped on my way back from last trip in late summer from the beach a few years back. Stopped to buy fruits and veggies at a roadside stand. They had the fresh ones going in two big kettles and a standing line waiting to buy the next batch! Put that trip in your bucket list!😁😍

Oh they are sooo good yummmm!
Best fresh boiled just after harvest.I prefer the jumbo ones. I'm sure they have a name but no labels on the giant boiling salt brine kettles.
The earth is so sweet in South Carolina😍

Fred Zeb Fudpucker, they just taste like cooked peas. I don't care for them either. Loved roasted peanuts!
