If you are blood type AB pos, what blood type can you receive if a transfusion is needed?
People who are blood type AB are known as the universal recipient and can be transfused with types O, A, B, and AB packed red blood cell units. This is possible since their red blood cells have both A and B antigens present, and their plasma lacks anti-A and anti-B antibodies.

Phyllis Lucile Gilmore Todd, That answer is the one and only correct answer.
You should have a discussion with your Doctor. He/they should have known better!

I have AB pos blood and while hospitalized I needed blood and they could find only 2 pints of my blood type. They gave me 6 pints of plasma and my kidneys shut down. That was 10 years ago and I am still under the care of a nephrologist. I vary between Stage 3 and Stage 4 kidney disease. If your answer is correct I sure have gone through a lot with my kidneys unnecessarily. Better check your answer.

Jim Laughner, Correction to my previous post: I stated "If you're AB- you could receive any blood type and either - or + RH factor." That is incorrect, What I meant was If you're AB+ you could receive any blood type and either - or + RH factor.

I thought O- was the universal recipient, and O+ was the universal donor.

pam mcguffee, you are wrong. Plasma is universal and not bloodtyped and can be obtained by spinning down packed volume of any blood type. And that plasma can be given to anybody

Phyllis Lucile Gilmore Todd, I thought a person could only receive their own blood type or O. Hmmmm 🤔. I’m sorry to hear about your kidney disease. Prayers for you! 🙏🏼

Linda Erickson Brousseau, Group O- is the Universal DONOR not the Universal RECEPIENT. The negative RH factor means there is No RH Antigen. Receiving anu other Blood Type tha O- will kill those of us will O- Blood becausr we have no Anyigend buy may have All Anyibodies. This is one of the reasons many women dies after gheir first child in centurirs gone by.
