In 1972, the U.S. Apollo 17 astronauts Harrison Schmitt and Eugene Cernan concluded a third and final moonwalk. After they were done with their activities (the moonwalk), they blasted off to rendezvous with the command module.

During 20 years as a Naval Aviator, including 13 years with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Captain Eugene A. Cernan left his mark on history with three historic missions in space as the Pilot of Gemini IX, the Lunar Module Pilot of Apollo X, and the Commander of Apollo XVII. Commander Cernan was the last person to walk on the Moon.

Harrison H. Schmitt, the Lunar Module pilot on Apollo 17, handled the final manned lunar landing space vehicle. With his lunar mission as a geologist and native New Mexican, Harrison is the only scientist to have explored the Moon's surface. He was the twelfth and second youngest person to set foot on the Moon. He was the second to last person to step off of the Moon.
