Burger King cooked up a Whopper of a prank with this gem in 1998. The chain took out a full-page ad in USA Today announcing the new item on its menu _ a burger explicitly for the estimated 32 million Americans who were left handed. Among the innovations for the burger all condiments rotated 180 degrees, thereby redistributing the weight of the sandwich so that the bulk of the condiments will skew to the left, thereby reducing the amount of lettuce and other toppings from spilling out the right side of the burger.

Even the company's brass got involved in the hoax, telling the public, "this was the ultimate 'have it your way' sandwich."

Burger King came clean the following day, but not without relaying many stories to the public about customers who wanted the "right hand whopper" or asking if they could get other sandwiches in a left-handed version.

The prank has been enshrined in the Museum of Hoaxes. The Museum of Hoaxes is a website created by Alex Boese in 1997 in San Diego, California as a resource for reporting and discussing hoaxes and urban legends, both past and present.
