The four men in the question were brothers and all were aviators. At the outbreak of WW2 they all held senior ranks in the RAF. Douglas, the eldest, had attended the 1936 Olympics. He had flown his own plane to Germany where he was a member of a parliamentary group invited to observe the games. In Berlin he attended a dinner hosted by Joachim von Ribbentrop, where he was introduced to Hitler and other leading members of the government. Also at the dinner was Rudolf Hess.

Hess was also an aviator and on 10 May 1941 flew a Bf110 solo to Scotland, where he hoped to arrange peace talks with the Duke of Hamilton (Brother #1), whom he erroneously believed to be prominent in opposition to the UK government. Hess crash-landed and was taken to hospital. Hamilton was informed and visited him whereupon Hess revealed his true identity. Hamilton immediately contacted Winston Churchill: Hess was imprisoned by the British until the end of the war and the subsequent Nuremberg trials.
