In the 1974 film, The Godfather, Part 2, who does Michael say "will not see the new year"?

In The Godfather, Part 2, the main story line is about Michael Corleone trying to hold crime family business ventures together from 1958 through 1959. At one point, Fredo Corleone has to deliver two million dollars to Havana, Cuba. The money will cement a partnership between Hyman Roth and the Corleone family. While carrying the promised money, Fredo arrives in Havana and meets with his brother, Michael. During their meeting, Michael mentions Hyman Roth and Johnny Ola, but Fredo says he has never met these men.

Michael then tells to his brother that it was Roth who tried to kill him at the Lake Tahoe, Nevada compound, and that he (Roth) plans to try again. Michael assures Fredo that he has already made his move, and that "Hyman Roth will never see the New Year."

Ultimately, Roth and all the conspirators against Michael including his brother Fredo are all killed. Their deaths are the direct results of Michael's efforts to completely end the Roth Conspiracy, which was the conflict between Hyman Roth, the Rosato Brothers, and the Corleone family. Here, as with most conspiracies, the parties got “locked in” to the conspiracy and the results could be anticipated.
