In the famous Fawlty Towers episode, Basil tells the Hamiltons that they can't have Waldorf salad because the kitchen has run out of what?

"Waldorf Salad" is the third episode of the second series of the BBC sitcom Fawlty Towers. Directed by Bob Spiers, it was first aired on 5 March 1979.

After arriving, the Hamiltons both order screwdrivers, a drink Basil has never heard of. Harry then confuses him by asking for a Waldorf salad, even though it is not on the menu, followed by two rare steaks. Mr. Hamilton is annoyed when Basil does not know what it is and must repeatedly correct Basil when he asks for the ingredients (which are celery, apples, walnuts, and grapes, topped with mayonnaise), after saying that the hotel is "out of Waldorfs", but demands it all the same.

A brilliant series. I have good German friends who strange as it might sound love love the episode when Basil says to Manuel "Don't mention the war" and of course that is exactly what happens.

Ken Jackson, Marian Spitzig, I so agree Ken. And Marian, that's your loss. There are so many Brit shows that are REALLY funny, even to this day. Most of our shows nowadays are just vaguely funny. I used to laugh till I cried at some of them.

Sean Philips, There are indeed some series and programmes that could contain what is now perceived non-PC content (a lot of them set in non-PC times), but it seems that Sit-coms do not and earlier non-PC sit-coms are no longer allowed to be aired (it ain't alf ot mum for one). What surprises me is that none of the Alf Garnett programmes are allowed - despite the fact that Alf was regularly shown up to be racist, misogynistic and very right wing and was consequently always on the 'losing side' (the only good thing about not showing this series is that we don't have to put up with the awful Tony Booth who, in my opinion, came across worse than Alf)

Roger Beattie, yet the show still airs daily in ‘our sterile PC world’! I don’t know which channels you view, but there are many series and programs which challenge today’s societal norms ...or maybe you just like playing the tired old PC card whenever you get the chance...
