Before his incarceration, Andy (Tim Robbins) was the vice president of a big bank in Portland, Maine. In the movie Andy's friend, Red (Morgan Freeman) says, "it (being a bank executive) was good work for such a young man."

Here in this 1994 film, it tells (1) the harsh and positive story of Andy Dufresne and (2) the human need for friendship. Overall the friendship of Andy and Red is a major element of the film. Red has been sent to prison for a crime committed in his youth. It was done 20 years ago. Andy, the banker, has been recently and wrongly convicted of murdering his wife. She is found in the arms of her lover.

Red is a black man, and Andy is white. Red has very little education but lots of street smarts. Red is the guy who can get anything smuggled into prison. Andy has lots of education but lacks any keen prison savvy. He is almost killed by the prison "sisters."

Notwithstanding their individual makeups, together Andy and Red learn (discover) the importance of having another person to believe in and trust. They find that everyone needs to be able to rely upon someone else.
