In the 1961 film "The Guns of Navarone", a small commando team in 1943 is sent to destroy big German guns on the Greek Island of Navarone in order to rescue Allied troops trapped on Kheros. Led by British Major Franklin (Anthony Quayle), the team includes American, Captain Keith Mallory (Gregory Peck), Greek resistance fighter Stavros (Anthony Quinn), and a reluctant explosives expert, Corporal Miller (David Niven). Captain Mallory is a key member of this team because of his political and military knowledge, personal abilities, and experience as a renowned spy.

Facing impossible odds, the small group of men must battle stormy seas and daunting cliffs to be successful with their mission. When Major Franklin is injured, Captain Mallory takes command, and personal enmities spill over as each man must step up to meet individual challenges.

The film seems perfectly well paced, allows enough time for character development, plot complications (including the requisite double-cross by a member of the commando team), and full story plot resolution.
