Film director Sergio Leone at first wanted Gian Maria Volonté for his ‘ugly character, but he was afraid the character would become a neuropath if played by Volonté. This was not what he wanted. He saw Eli Wallach (some say in How the West was Won, others say in The Magnificent Seven) and then he knew he had found "The Ugly" actor. Wallach was a dramatic actor with a natural talent for comedy, who reminded him of Wallace Beery and Charlie Chaplin. Eli is it (The Ugly")!

This movie comes down to the faces of Eastwood, Van Cleef, and Wallach. They are mutual antagonists who perform a three way duel in an old graveyard. Their scene in the graveyard according to critics has become one of the most imitated and parodied in motion picture history. With the music and film cutting from face to face, capturing each set of eyes, each hand reaching for a gun, this film really does give Leone's unique vision of a western.

"The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" is a good character study; the characters are illustrated by means of their actions and how they confront to each other. The Ugly, is open and direct, his feelings are changeable to an almost ridiculous degree, but they’re not fake. If he tries to fake a feeling, he is shown up for what he really is, a guy begging for a cookie. Compared to the Ugly, both the Good and the Bad are calculating personalities.
