In the (1968-1971) TV show, "Julia," Diahann Carroll plays widowed single mother Julia Baker. Her husband, Army Capt. Baker, an O-1 Bird Dog artillery spotter pilot was shot down in Vietnam. Julia has a job as a nurse in a doctor's office at a large aerospace company. This is a very important job in 1969. At that time, Black and minority ethnic nurses according to the National Health Service Corps (NHS) only made up about 25 per cent of all nurses in America. She was middle class.

In "Julia" the doctor, Morton Chegley, is played by Lloyd Nolan, and Julia's romantic interests are played by Paul Winfield and Fred Williamson. Julia's son, Corey (Marc Copage) was approximately six to nine years old during the time that this series exists. He had barely known his father before he died. Corey's best friend in the show is Earl J. Waggedorn. The Waggedorns live downstairs in the same apartment building as the Bakers. Their members included Len (Hank Brandt), Marie (Betty Beaird), son Earl J. Waggedorn (Michael Link) and infant son.

"Julia" is now remembered as being a groundbreaking show. It did not explode on the TV screen with people living in poverty and in a ghetto. "Julia" showed African Americans living in a "plush, suburban setting". It was a far, far cry from the bitter realities of life for African Americans in many of the urban ghetto of the country.
