In what country is Mecca located?
Mecca is a city in the Tihamah plain in Saudi Arabia that is also the capital and administrative headquarters of the Makkah Region. The city is located 70 km (43 mi) inland from Jeddah in a narrow valley at a height of 277 m (909 ft) above sea level, and 340 kilometres (210 mi) south of Medina. Its resident population in 2012 was roughly 2 million, although visitors more than triple this number every year during the hajj ("pilgrimage") period held in the twelfth Muslim lunar month of Dhu al-Hijjah.
As the birthplace of Muhammad and the site of Muhammad's first revelation of the Quran (specifically, a cave 3 km (2 mi) from Mecca), Mecca is regarded as the holiest city in the religion of Islam and a pilgrimage to it known as the Hajj is obligatory for all able Muslims. Mecca is home to the Kaaba, by majority description Islam's holiest site, as well as being the direction of Muslim prayer.

Joanne Serin, you are forgetting that muslim arabs have been living in Jerusalem for centuries. In fact Jews and Muslims lived peacefully together until after WWII the allies decided to send the European Jews to what was then Palestine but without putting in definite borders. The Palestinians welcomed the Jews as they saw them as people who knew what it was like to be stateless but the surrounding Arab nations took exceptiion to this and fought the Zionists in a losing battle. After the fighting was over, Plestinians who had fled their homes returned to find them taken over by new Jewish arrivals. No wonder that this area is now such a war zone.

I believe Mohammed was born in Medina ( the second holiest city in Islam). Jerusalem (specifically the Dome of the Rock at the top of the Temple Mount) is where the Angel Gabriel lifted Mohammed into the heavens for his dream and trip around the Middle East. Also, Islam is an Abrahamic religion - meaning it traces its origins back to Abraham and his decedents just like Judaism and Christianity. Moses and Jesus are profits in their religion. You only have to spend several days in Jerusalem to understand how intertwined these three religions are. What has always puzzled me is why these three religions which have much in common have such hostility for each other.

Bradley Gans, there are actually 5 religions of the same including Buddha which years ago I saw was expressed by an old catholic theologian. Each have 1 finger but they all meet in the palm. We are all bound by our own mortality none better than the other. I don’t come from the US but the Islamic uprising seems to come from a concern Judaism through the might of the US will take over world

Bradley Gans, very well put. I speant a year in Saudi, training the saudi military. a few of us traveled to jeruselem , thru jordan. they had to staple our exit visas to our passports to be torn offwhen we returned. i never understood the hostility either, for the reasons you just said. but hate breeds hate, and then it becomes self propetuating to the point when no one knowscwhen it started , or why.
