In the 1979 western adventure romance film, The Electric Horseman which stars Robert Redford and Jane Fonda, it is a film about a former rodeo champion (Sonny) who is hired by a cereal company to become its spokesperson. In the film, the star runs away on an electric-lit horse worth 12 million dollars. He is wearing the costume that he is given to promote the cereal product. Sonny feels that he and the former championship horse are kindred spirits. His mission is to free this fine horse from the evil food conglomerate and its exploitation.

Sydney Pollack and Robert Redford had already done four other pictures together as director and star, respectively, before they made The Electric Horseman. Besides the Las Vegas location, scenes in The Electric Horseman took place in the Utah wilderness near Redford's home. Other filming also took place throughout Nevada and in various locations across the state of Utah.

The picture became the top-grossing movie of the 1979 film season and garnered an Academy Award nomination for Best Sound. Pollack had fun when he made a cameo appearance as a Las Vegas regular who makes a pass at Fonda, Sonny's girl friend.
