Centralia, Pennsylvania was a small town of approximately 1,500 people. While the decades-old fire has caused most residents to abandon the town, a few holdouts remain. The government bought out the homes and tore them down. Some people born and raised in Centralia that refused to move. There's an old Russian cemetery located in Centralia that cannot be moved because the relatives cannot be found. Route 61 runs through Centralia. The road opened up and the smoke from the mine fire still can be seen coming out. A bypass road was built around route 61 where the opening is because it's a well traveled road. The fire started when some coal miners decided to burn their garbage and caught a vein on fire.
