The banana split was invented in Latrobe, Pennsylvania at Tassels drug store in 1904. David Evans Strickler, who was a 23 year old apprentice and sundae enthusiast, invented it by splitting a banana and putting three different sundaes in the middle...... strawberry, chocolate and pineapple. Word about this new style sundae spread by word of mouth and newspapers. Soon, others made their own versions of the banana split. In 2004, Latrobe celebrated the 100 year anniversary of the ice cream treat. That same year the National Ice Cream Retailers Association credited Latrobe, Pennsylvania as the birthplace of the banana split. The concoction is now enjoyed by millions all over the world.
