"The Phantom of the Opera" is a musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber with lyrics by Charles Hart and Richard Stilgoe. It opened on the West End (London) stage in 1986 and on Broadway two years later. It is the longest running show in Broadway history, staging its 10,000th performance on 11 February 2012. It's the second longest running West End musical after "Les Miserables" and the third longest running play overall after "The Mousetrap". By 2011 it had been seen by over 130 million people across 27 countries, and has won numerous awards.

The play is based on the French novel "Le Fantome de L'Opera" by Gaston Leroux. The plot revolves around a beautiful singer named Christine who becomes the obsession of a mysterious, disfigured musical genius living in a subterranean labyrinth under the Garnier Opera. Michael Crawford was the first to play the title role, with Sarah Brightman as Christine. As of 2017 it continues to play on both Broadway and West End.
