In what year did the Falklands War occur?

The Falklands War, also known as the Guerra de las Malvinas, was a war between Argentina and Great Britain from April 1 to June 14 1982. The conflict occurred due to both nations claiming sovereignty over the Falkland Islands, South Sandwich Islands and South Georgia.

During the war, the British captured over 11000 Argentine prisoners, all of whom were released after the surrender of the Argentine armed forces. Argentina sustained 655 men killed and 1657 wounded, while Britain lost 236 men and suffered 775 wounded.

Argentina’s defeat severely discredited the military government and led to the restoration of civilian rule in Argentina in 1983.

Britain's victory over Argentina is widely seen to have helped the Tories win the 1983 General Election and cemented Margaret Thatcher's image as the "Iron Lady".

I was in the British Army then, and for sheer professionalism and fighting spirit we were/are among the best!

In the early 90s I was on a business trip where we were allocated room shares with colleagues from different countries so we could meet new people. I was allocated a room with a lady from Argentina, she refused to speak with me because I am British. Perhaps a slight oversight on the part of the American organisers, but I found it a bit churlish.

About a thousand miles away from Argentina, who have never had a settlement there, yet they claimed it as theirs! The native South American’s have a stronger claim against the Spanish invaders who now make up Argentina, if you follow their logic.

Fred Keogh, the Argentine Air force was not easy to defeat, right? As for the soldiers, British professional troops fought against 18 year old boys who cried for their mothers. I don't see reasons to be so proud.
