Tintoretto (born Jacopo Comin, late September or early October, 1518 – May 31, 1594) was an Italian painter and a notable exponent of the Renaissance school.

Tintoretto was born in Venice in 1518, as the eldest of 21 children. His father, Giovanni, was a dyer, or tintore; hence the son got the nickname of Tintoretto, little dyer, or dyer's boy, which is anglicized as Tintoret.

A great Italian Mannerist painter of the Venetian school and one of the most important artists of the late Renaissance. His paintings include 'Vulcan Surprising Venus' and 'Mars', the Mannerist 'Christ and the Adulteress', and his masterpiece of 1594, 'The Last Supper of San Giorgio Maggiore'. Increasingly concerned with the drama of light and space, he achieved in his mature work.
