The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia was founded on February 8,1693. It was founded by a royal charter decreed by King William III and Queen Mary II, and is named after these monarchs. Presidents Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, and John Tyler each attended William and Mary, and a young George Washington received his surveyor's license through the college.
