Although the largest city in the state by population is Anchorage, Alaska, its capital Juneau is the second largest. The City and Borough of Juneau (2010 US Census) had a population of just over 31,000. Its population can increase temporarily by an additional 6,000 people daily during the Alaskan cruise season, as Juneau is a major stop on cruise itineraries.

Unique among state capitals, Juneau is the only capital which has no roads to the rest of Alaska, or to the rest of the North American continent, It is completely isolated by rugged mountains and can only be reached by water or air.

Named after Quebec prospector Joe Juneau, it has been the capital since 1906, when the US Congress moved it from Sitka. The Juneau municipality is the second largest city in the United States in area, being larger than both Delaware and Rhode Island.
