On the 1950s TV show "The Adventures of Superman", Professor Pepperwinkle was the name of the brilliant but reckless professor who always created trouble for Superman (George Reeves who played Clark Kent and Superman). Professor Pepperwinkle's persona was that of an elderly, absent-minded inventor whose gadgets cause Superman a good deal of trouble. He is a character who appeared in five episodes during the last three color seasons of the show. The professor was played by Phillips Tead.

During the time that "The Adventures of Superman" was on the air, the show's first two seasons (episodes 1–52, 26 titles per season) were filmed in black and white. With seasons three through six (episodes 53–104, 13 titles per season), they were filmed in color but originally shown on TV in black and white. In 1965, this show was first shown in color.
