On the ABC 1978 to 1982 American sitcom "Mork & Mindy", Mork's leader on his home planet of Ork is Orson. The unseen and long suffering leader is voiced by Ralph James in the series. He has sent Mork to Earth to get him off Ork; humor is not permitted on Mork's planet.

Creators and producers of "Mork and Mindy" stated that the show was inspired by an episode of "The Dick Van Dyke Show" titled “It May Look Like a Walnut.” In the episode, Danny Thomas is a guest star who is an alien from another planet. When Carl Reiner, who wrote the episode for "The Dick Van Dyke Show", went on to be a director on the TV show "Happy Days", he introduced Mork in the episode “My Favorite Orkan”. Next, the character returned in the episode “Mork Returns”. The character of Mork proved to be very popular with viewers. This got TV executives thinking that the character needed his own TV show.

The show got its start in September 1978, it lasted for 4 seasons and had 95 episodes in syndication. It was cancelled in May 1982. When "Mork & Mindy" was cancelled, its star (Robin Williams) only found out from the media. “I found out the show was cancelled by reading it in Variety. In Hollywood that’s like reading your own obituary: ‘You’re dead, good luck!’” Williams told people.
