On the 1982 to 1993 TV sitcom "Cheers", Norm Peterson (George Wendt) has a oft-mentioned wife. Her named is Vera, and she is never completely shown on the show. In a Thanksgiving Day episode, she finally appeared. Then her face is covered by a pie meant for Sam Malone (and thrown by Diane Chambers) before the audience can see her face. In the show Vera is played by George Wendt's real life wife, Bernadette Birkett.

Vera is the butt of many of Norm's jokes, but he has on several occasions professed secretly an undying love for his wife. He has defended her honor. He also refuses to cheat on her. He explained in one instance that he felt he was a bad husband; but, he would not cheat on his wife as it would make him a bad person. During the second season of " Cheers", Norm and Vera separate, but they reconcile in the last episode of Season Two.

During the entire series, the only character to star in every episode of "Cheers" (275) was Norm Peterson. By watching the 200th episode, we actually find out that Norm is the main character of the show's opening theme song "Where Everybody Knows Your Name". When Norm walks in Cheers, everybody yells his name. What is a funny fact is that In the episode "It's a Wonderful Wife" (season 9, episode 20) Vera tells Rebecca that Norm's real first name is Hilary. Norm explains that he was named after his grandfather who "once killed a man for laughing at him." Is it true that everyone knows Norm's real name?
