On which continent is Israel located?
Israel is geographically located in Asia.
The continent itself spreads from Turkey in the far West, through to Japan and Russia in the East of Asia; and from Arctic Russia in the North to the islands of Indonesia in the South.
Although the exact border between Europe and Asia is not clearly defined, most geographers agree that it runs south from the Ural Mountains, along the coasts of the Caspian and Black Seas, and the far eastern coast of the Mediterranean.
Politically, Israel does not have particularly close ties with the rest of Asia (or the Middle East for that matter. Until its exclusion in the mid-1970s, for example, Israel competed in Asian sporting competitions. However, since the 1990s, Israel has more commonly participated in European sporting contests – for example it is a member of UEFA (The Union of European Football Associations).

I thought this question was a “no brainer” until I saw that 50% got it wrong. When I was at school the maps and globes in the classroom clearly showed the continents in different colours and Israel ( Palestine on most of the maps in schools in the 1950s) was clearly included on Asia. But today take a look at GOOGLE EARTH and assuming you know where Israel is located you could be excused for assuming that the landmass known as the Arabian Peninsula is part of Africa rather than Asia. Placing Israel in Europe is an assumption based on politics rather than geographical knowledge. Understandable as the state of Israel is far closer politically and culturally to Europe than to its geographic neighbours and the Palestinians who inhabited the region prior to the creation of the State of Israel. OK there are excuses for getting the answer wrong, but it is a sad reflection on the standard of instruction in geography in our schools. So congratulations Sandra, that was a surprisingly good question as 50% of the readers learned something new🙂

Plus, "SONG CONTEST"??? It's so political now (has been for years in honesty) with statements like "And our twelve points go to (pause for maximum effect) our lovely neighbors Lichtenstein"; even though it's possibly the worst song in the history of music. (Not a dig at Lichtensteinians, just using them as an example).
