The American children's television series "Romper Room" was a franchised and syndicated show that aired from 1953 to 1994. This was a program which was targeted at preschoolers (children five years of age or younger). It was created and produced by Bert Claster. His wife Nancy of Claster Television, a Baltimore, Maryland–based television distributor founded in 1953 as Romper Room Inc., was a key TV presenter on the show. One of the things that Nancy Claster liked to do as a hostess and teacher at the end of each episode was to use a "magic mirror" to say hello to the kids watching at home. Nancy would recite this rhyme: “Romper, bomper, stomper, boo! Tell me, tell me, tell me do. Magic Mirror, tell me today, have all my friends had fun at play?”

During its fifty years on the air, "Romper Room" gave millions of young kids their first exposure to a preschool/kindergarten learning environment. The staff on the show featured people who led a group of 7-8 children in various educational and play activities. The children were about 4-5 years old, and were rotated every couple of months.

Consistent with the show's school room ethos and just like real class rooms in those days, each show would begin with the hostess leading the kids in reciting the U.S. Pledge of Allegiance. Then the hostess would either read books to the kids, teach them the alphabet, or direct them in playing games, doing exercises, singing songs, and learning moral lessons and polite behavior.
