In the 1958 - 1961 CBS TV series, "Wanted: Dead or Alive," the weapon (The Mare's Leg) was the name given to a customized shortened rifle used by Josh Randall (Steve McQueen's character) in the series. McQueen's character and the gun that he used, the "Mare's Leg", starred on CBS for 3 seasons in 94 episodes.

The Mare’s Leg weapon was created for McQueen’s character of Josh Randall. It was purely a Hollywood invention for use on "Wanted: Dead or Alive". The original Mare’s Leg was made by cutting down the barrel and magazine tube of a .44-40 caliber Winchester Model 1892. By removing most of the stock, it could fit in a leg holster and be fired using only one hand. At McQueen’s request, It was also fitted with a duck-bill hammer and enlarged lever loop.

Since the CBS series with McQueen, versions of the gun have been seen on other television shows ('Trackdown') and on the big screen in films ('Westworld'). Today, replicas are being made by Eagle Squadron Productions, which starts with a Winchester 1892 carbine in .44-40 cut down form, just like the way the originals were made.

Additionally, it is interesting to note that in 2008 Legacy Sports International began selling their version of the weapon. It was made by Chiappa in Italy; it is sold as the Puma 92 pistol. In 2010, Rossi Firearms began offering a Mare’s Leg under the name Ranch Hand chambered in .45 Colt, .44 Magnum, and .357 Magnum/.38 Special. Plus the gun is manufactured by Taurus in Brazil.
