There was once a television series where the heartwarming side of life in a black inner-city tenement in 1967 was portrayed by Oprah Winfrey. This 1990 series on ABC was called "Brewster Place." While this show was running, Oprah was a talk show host in her real life. However, in "Brewster Place" she starred as Mattie Michael, a strong willed, caring woman who had suffered many trials in her life. She was the center of activity in Brewster Place.

With her best friend, Etta Mae Johnson (Brenda Pressley), Mattie runs a small neighborhood restaurant called La Scala, where neighbors partake in both her food and her sensible, sound, and keen advice. Miss Sophie (Olivia Cole) is the resident gossip and troublemaker; a man named Jessie is Sophie's husband.

Others living at Brewster Place include: Kiswana and Abshu, a young couple that are seriously dating (they often receive advice); Ralph is Mattie's widowed cousin; he has 3 kids (they all need good advice); Mickey is the cook at the restaurant; and Willie is the mail man. On this show, all or most of the characters want to show that they are law-abiding, God-fearing, and often conservative in their social and cultural thinking. They advocate for fundamental American values and aspire to have the American dream for their children.
