The 1942 Rose Bowl was the 28th Rose Bowl game between Oregon State and Duke University. It was originally scheduled to be played in the Rose Bowl Stadium on News Year's Day in Pasadena, California, however, it was moved to Durham, North Carolina due to fears about an attack by the Japanese on the West Coast of the United States following the attack on Pearl Harbor. The United States government had prohibited large public gatherings on the West Coast of the United States for the duration of the war; the first significant canceled event was the Rose Bowl Game.

The Rose Bowl Game is an annual American college football bowl game, usually played on January 1 at the Rose Bowl stadium in Pasadena, California. The Rose Bowl is nicknamed "The Granddaddy of Them All" because it is the oldest bowl game. It was first played in 1902, and has been played annually since 1916.
