East Timor (Timor-Leste) is a nation in the Maritime Pacific, it consists of the eastern half of Timor, several outlying islands, and a small enclave inside of West Timor. It's reported population as of 2010 was 1,167,242. Of that number 96.9% were Roman Catholic. This was a substantial increase from 1975 when only 20% of the population were reported to be Roman Catholic.

East Timor gained independence from Portugal in 1975, Portugal had occupied the country since 1509. Portugal's exit brought civil war among various factions. East Timor's much larger neighbor, Indonesia, which had earlier gained independence from the Dutch, invaded shortly afterward. Declaring East Timor its 27th province, Indonesia attempted to integrate East Timor. Under Indonesia's policy of Pancasila, all non-monotheistic religions were outlawed. significantly reducing traditional religions.

Indonesia's integration efforts were unsuccessful and led to the genocide of 200,000 East Timorese. Those that identified as Protestant and Muslim were generally supportive of Indonesia, while Roman Catholicism became strongly identified with the resistance.

After UN intervention, East Timor was recognized as independent in 2002. Roman Catholic Church participation in the "national liberation" is noted in East Timor's Constitution.

Unfortunately, violence continued. In 2006, 155,000 people fled their homes due to the unrest. the UN again provided a peace-keeping force until December 31, 2012.
