Her Royal Highness, the Princess Anne, is the second child and only daughter of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh. HRH Princess Anne competed at the 1976 Olympics in the equestrian three-day event. She did not approach a medal but had won an individual gold medal at the 1971 Burghley Three-Day Event, and won individual and team silver medals in 1975 at Luhmuhlen. Her first marriage was to Mark Phillips, who competed in eventing and won a team gold medal at the 1972 Olympics and a team silver medal in 1988. Their daughter, Zara Phillips, also became an eventer and has won multiple international medals, including an Olympic silver in 2012 team eventing.

Equestrian events were first included in the modern Olympic Games in 1900. By 1912, all three Olympic disciplines still seen today were part of the games. The three events are:

Dressage, Show jumping and the three-day Eventing.
