This Norwegian city was founded in 1040 with about 3000 inhabitants. Oslo became a capital around 1300, but the Black Death destroyed half of the inhabitants in 1349. At that time, Norway became a province ruled by Denmark, and Copenhagen became the capital.

In1624, a 3 day fire razed the city, after which King Christian IV of Denmark-Norway ordered the city to be rebuilt closer to Akershus Fortress. This fortress was, and still is, a medieval castle built to protect Oslo, and used as a royal residence, and also as a prison. The people were against this, but the king even renamed the city after himself- Christiania

The Swedish king Karl Joham finished building the Royal Palace in 1848 and in 1866 the Parliament building was finished. Christiania's population soared to 230,000 because of workers coming in from rural areas. On May 17, 1914, Christiania got back its own constitution and became the capital. A spelling reform renamed the city Kristiania starting from 1877. In 1925 the original Norwegian name of Oslo was restored.

Being the economic and governmental centre of Norway, Oslo is one of the fastest growing cities in Europe as of the early 2000's. The immigrant population is growing faster than the Norwegian population. The city's population is 669,060, while the metropolitan area is around 1.71 million. It is about the 4th most expensive city to live in in the world, tied with Melbourne.
