Republican candidate Rutherford B. Hayes in 1876, Republican candidate Benjamin Harrison in 1888, and Republican candidate George W. Bush in 2000 were all elected US President by winning the majority of the electoral college votes. They all lost the popular vote to their Democratic opponents: Samuel J. Tilden in 1876, Grover Cleveland in 1888, and Albert Gore in 2000.

Kevin Coleman, You are misinformed. The House of Representatives does not comprise the Electoral College. The U.S. Constitution contains very few provisions relating to the qualifications of Electors, but Article II, section 1, clause 2 provides that no Senator or Representative, or Person holding an Office of Trust or Profit under the United States, shall be appointed an Elector. https://www.archives.gov/federal-register/electoral-college/electors.html

There are 1.8 million uncounted absentee ballots from the 2000 election. Absentee ballots tend to be about 15% better for Republicans than the show up vote. If they were counted in 2000, George Bush also won the popular vote. Gore, the sore head, could lave learned from the grace of Samuel Tilden.

Answer is incorrect. There were actually 4 before the 2016 election. You forgot to include John Quincy Adams in 1824.
