As of 2014, 22.8 percent of Americans reported their religious affiliation as “none.” These people are referred to as "nones." The number of nones has steadily grown since the 1990s. For comparison, 21 percent of Americans identify as Catholics; 47 percent as Protestant, and approximately 2 percent each, Jewish, Mormon, Other Christian, and Other.

In 2008 the American Religious Identity Survey revealed that 35 percent of Nones were agnostics; 27 percent, theists; 24 percent, deists; and 7 percent, atheists. Theists believe in the existence of at least one god. Deists believe in God, who created the universe and has abandoned it or does not interfere with its working. Agnostics are undecided about the existence of a god. Atheists have no god at all.

Typically, Nones are liberal. Some are joining secular groups. There is a correlation between having no religion and both a longer life span and less teenage pregnancy. About a third of Nones are Millennials, and these younger Americans tend to reject reliance on establish institutions such as religion, politics, marriage, government, the media, and the labor market.
