Known for their hard-driving rock-and-roll with emphasis on the manic, innovative beats of drummer John Bonham, Led Zeppelin also showed a quieter and more pensive side, as in this ballad of a heartbroken guy.

“Going to California" appeared on Led Zep’s fourth studio album, which is not further titled. Released on 11/8/71, it achieved 23-times multi-platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America. That gives “Led Zep IV” the third-highest RIAA ranking ever. It also means that the group sold a whole lot of copies.

The song’s title appears in the fourth line of the lyrics: “Spent my days with a woman unkind. Smoked my stuff and drank all my wine. Made up my mind to make a new start. Going to California with an aching in my heart.”

“Evil Woman” is Electric Light Orchestra’s first global hit, from the group’s fifth album, released in 1975. Songwriter/Lead singer Jeff Lynne said he penned “Evil Woman” in 30 minutes, to use as “filler” for ELO’s “Face the Music” album.

“All Right Now” was written by Paul Rodgers and Andy Fraser when Rodgers was front-man for “Free” and Fraser was the group’s bassist. The song reached number two in the UK and number four in the US.

“Heartache Tonight” was a number 1 hit for the Eagles in 1979. Written by Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Bob Seger, and JD Souther, it was the group’s last chart-topper and won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.
