The novel "Campbell's Kingdom" was written by Hammond Innes, and published in 1952. Ralph Hammond Innes, CBE (15 July 1913 – 10 June 1998) was a British novelist who wrote over 30 novels, as well as children's and travel books.

Closely following the plot of the book, the film "Campbell's Kingdom" is set in Canada, and stars Dirk Bogarde as Bruce Campbell. Bruce inherits an area of land, named "Campbell's Kingdom" by the locals, from his grandfather and, when visiting the site, finds that it is soon to be flooded as part of a hydroelectric scheme.

However, there is thought to be oil under the land and, with the help of love interest Jean Lucas (played by Barbara Murray), geologist Boy Blayden (Michael Craig) and drilling contractor James MacDonald (James Robertson Justice) Bruce sets out to find oil before the land is flooded. Dirty tricks by the corrupt construction contractor Owen Morgan (Stanley Baker) attempt to prevent any delay to the hydroelectric scheme and, for a while, it seems that Morgan wins the day, until disaster strikes.
