From 250-225 BCE, The Parisii, a Celtic tribe, founded a town on the Île de la Cité called "Lucotecia."In 52 BCE, The Parisii were defeated by the Roman general Titus Labienus and a Gallo-Roman garrison town, called Lutetia, was founded on the left bank of the Seine. By the 3rd century CE, this growing city gradually became known as Civitas Parisiorum, the "City of the Parisii", then simply "Paris."
