In the 2002 film "Gangs of New York" in the slum neighborhood of Five Points, Manhattan in 1846, two gangs have a final battle in Paradise Square: The nativist, Protestant "Natives" led by Bill "the Butcher" Cutting, and the Irish Catholic immigrant "Dead Rabbits" led by "Priest" Vallon. The Dead Rabbits (the immigrants) only want to be treated and seen as equals. They want to be recognized by others for who they are, hard workers, strong minds, and causing good in the world.

Bill kills Vallon and orders that he be buried with honor. Bill declares the Dead Rabbits outlawed. Having witnessed this, Vallon's young son hides the knife that killed his father. Next, he is taken to an orphanage on Blackwell's Island. All of his subsequent actions are devoted to getting revenge for the death of his father.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz, and Daniel Day-Lewis are stars in this epic tale of vengeance and survival. This film shows how the waves of immigrants swelled the population of New York, lawlessness and corruption thrived in lower Manhattan's Five Points district. After years of incarceration, the young, Amsterdam Vallon (DiCaprio), returned to New York seeking total revenge against the rival gang leader, Bill Cutting (Day-Lewis). But in the end Amsterdam's personal vendetta becomes part of the gang warfare that erupts as he and his fellow Irishmen fight to carve a proper place for themselves in their newly adopted homeland, America.
