The First Amendment (Amendment I) to the United States Constitution prohibits the making of any law respecting an establishment of religion, impeding the free exercise of religion, abridging the freedom of speech, infringing on the freedom of the press, interfering with the right to peaceably assemble, or prohibiting the petitioning for a governmental redress of grievances. It was adopted on December 15, 1791, as one of the ten amendments that constitute the Bill of Rights.

mrlindsey, slavery was rampant all over the world with all races being enslaved. The men that wrote the Constitution were dealing with the norms of the day and they were an amazing group of men that thought well into the future to guarantee our country's success. As a women I could choose to be angry that there were not women involved. We were certainly "oppressed" compared to the freedoms and protections we have today. But that just makes no sense. We need to be grateful for the progress our country has made, not constantly look back on the iniquities of the past that happened long before we were born.

Mr. Lindsey, Don’t see you complaining about the rampant slavery around the world today and if you're in the US without those men you wouldn’t have the right to whine now but your disdain for this country can be easily solved, hop on a plane and leave.

Not possible to decide which of our rights is most important. If you were adjudged guilty without due process or forced to confess to a crime you did not commit or ordered to give housing to military personnel, you might have a different take on priorities.

Why is having tax-exempt status for property and businesses owned and operated by religious organizations allowed? In effect, the government is subsidizing the organizations by not collecting taxes that would be collected by non-religious businesses.

Dallas Preuitt Boyer, Many Americans don’t appreciate the freedoms we enjoy or the quality of life we have because of that wonderful document; the constitution. It took the nation from worst to first in a very short time, because it guaranteed the freedoms to create and own property.

iblobar, Come on. Learn about your country and it’s founding documents. Not all of the framers of the constitution kept slaves. Those who did, didn’t approve of slavery.
