A mentally ill former student killed 17 students, teachers, and administrators and wounded 14 others in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, near Miami. Seven days later, on February 21, the Florida State House of Representatives voted, 97-10, to post “In God We Trust” signs in all Florida school buildings. The bill indicates that the signs should be conspicuously positioned.

While Rep. Kimberly Daniels mentioned the shooting and paid lip service to the need for practical, proactive measures to stop this the of tragedy, she focused her speech on the need for God in the schools and said that the “real thing” the House needed to address is “issues of the heart.”

In contrast, representing the opponents of the measure, Rep. Carlos G. Smith posted on Twitter that it is vital to maintain a separation between church and state and called the bill "inappropriate”.

Before this bill becomes law, the Florida State Senate would have to pass it and the state’s governor would have to sign it. If it does become law, it is likely to be challenged, perhaps eventually all the way to the United States Supreme Court.
