The Minnesota Vikings were one of the most successful NFL teams of the 1970s. But the franchise had the dubious distinction of being the first to lose four Super Bowls.

On January 11, 1970, the Vikings were upset 23-7 by the AFL's Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl IV, giving the established NFL its second straight Super Bowl loss. The Baltimore Colts lost to the Jets the previous year.

The Chiefs used a short-pass game plan and a physical defense to stuff the Vikings and keep their vaunted Purple People Eaters defense off-balance on a muddy field at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans.

Kansas City quarterback Len Dawson was the game's MVP. The game also became a legend for NFL Films. Chiefs coach Hank Stram wore a microphone throughout the contest which provided one of the most entertaining highlight reels and voice clips in sports history. Stram, at one point, is heard trying to jockey with game officials when the ref asks him why he is standing on the field. Priceless stuff.

The Vikings lost Super Bowls IV, VIII (24-7 to Miami), IX (16-6 to Pittsburgh) and XI (32-14 to Oakland). They've never won a Super Bowl.

The Buffalo Bills lost four consecutive Super Bowls XXV, XXVI, XXVII, XXVIII.

The Denver Broncos have lost five Super Bowls (XII, XXI, XII, XXIV, XLVIII).
