Roy Hobbs loved to play baseball. He played catch with his father on the family farm. One day his father collapsed under a tree and died from a heart attack. This tree is later split in half by lightning. Hobbs carves a bat from the tree's wood and burns the word “Wonderboy” into it.

In the film, Roy dreams of playing in the National Baseball League. He bids goodbye to his childhood sweetheart Iris and tries to make it as a baseball player. On his way to tryouts he encounters a shady woman who changes his life forever. He puts his dreams of a baseball career on hold.

Nineteen years after meeting the odd woman, Hobbs is finally signed to the New York Knights who sit in last place in the league. The principal owner, “The Judge”, is actively campaigning for his team to lose games. This includes distracting Roy with a woman named Memo, bribing players, intimidation and threats. Through it all, Roy must find a way to win because this is his last chance.
