French musical composer Jacques Morali originated the idea for this disco group in 1977. He approached singer/actor Victor Willis with the idea and the two began searching for members to fill out their cast. The first member to join the group was Felipe Rose who became the American Indian. They were quickly joined by Alex Briley who chose a soldier as his persona. Soon Mark Mussler, Dave Forrest, Lee Moutin, joined the group as a construction worker, a cowboy and a "leatherman" or biker, respectively. Willis led the group as a police officer but he also appeared as several other characters depending on the song, including a sailor for the smash hit, "In the Navy." Later replacements were Glenn Hughes who took over as the biker, David Hodo as the construction worker and Randy Jones who became the cowboy.

Perhaps three of their most popular hits were "Macho Man," "Y.M.C.A.," and "In the Navy." The US Navy actually used this song as part of a recruitment drive in the early 80s and was performed with Kelsey Grammer at the end of the comedy hit "Down Periscope."

The group itself was named for Greenwich Village, a popular section of New York city where many of the band's members frequented.
