The first mention of Mercado de San José de la Boquería, now simply referred to as La Boquería market, in Barcelona, Spain dates from 1217, when tables were installed near the old city gate to sell meat. From December 1470, the opportunity to sell pigs at the market then existed. Also at the time, the Market had the name Mercat Bornet or was simply called Mercat de la Palla (Straw Market) by local people (citizens) until 1794.

When the market was first started, it was not enclosed and did not have any official statute. It was regarded as a simple extension of the market of Plaça Nova which then extended to the Plaça del Pi. Today it is a tourist attraction in its own right, and it is no easy task getting past so many gawping tourists.

Concerning this market, it took decades and decades for the authorities to finally decide to construct a separate market on La Rambla, housing mostly fishmongers and butchers. It is not until 1826 that La Boquería market was legally recognized. It took a convention which was held in 1835 to decide that formal and appropriate construction regarding La Boquería would officially take place.
