Claudia Alta Taylor was born in Karnack, Texas, a town in Harrison County, near the state's border with Louisiana. She was named for her mother's brother Claud. During her infancy, her nurse, Alice Tittle, commented that she was as "purty as a ladybird". Opinions differ about whether the name refers to an actual bird or a ladybird beetle. The nickname virtually replaced her actual first name for the rest of her life. Her father and siblings called her Lady, and her husband called her Bird—the name she used on her marriage license.

Lady Bird Johnson was perhaps our most under-rated First Lady, in my opinion. Few Americans know that she spearheaded the nationwide effort of beautification of America that evolved into a real environmental movement, as evidenced by her fully environmentally equipped ranch. When visiting the ranch, George and Laura Bush learned about the environmental aspects of her ranch and emulated them at their ranch in Crawford, Texas. George W. Bush always introduced her as "our environmental first lady." Johnson was instrumental in instituting the Head Start program, which provided support for disadvantaged and indigent students. Her influence as First Lady was one of poise and grace and a great deal of compassion for those less fortunate. She invited Barry Goldwater to speak at the Johnson Presidential Library but didn't attend because she wanted Goldwater to have the freedom to speak with candor about the challenges facing the nation.
