Thomas Cromwell, 1st Earl of Essex KG PC (1485 – 28 July, 1540) was an English lawyer and statesman who served as chief minister to King Henry VIII of England from 1532 to 1540. Accused of being a traitor, Cromwell was condemned to death without trial and beheaded on Tower Hill on 28 July 1540.

Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex, KG, PC (10 November, 1565 – 25 February, 1601) was an English nobleman and a favourite of Elizabeth I. In 1601, he led an abortive coup d'état (overthrow of a state) against the government and was executed for treason at the Tower of London.

Cromwell's story is told in a truly excellent novel and television series called Wolf Hall. The former won the Booker Prize and the latter stars Oscar winner Mark Rylance as Cromwell, Damian Lewis (from Homeland) as Henry VIII and Claire Foy (the Golden Globe-winning star of Netflix's The Crown) as Anne Boleyn. It's available on Netflix UK so might also be available in the US and I really cannot recommend it highly enough. Historically it's very accurate and authentic, unlike that sensationalist garbage The Tudors. :-)
