USS Jupiter was a United States Navy collier--a ship that supplied coal to other ships in the fleet prior to the conversion of US Navy ships to burn oil. As the fleet was converted, Jupiter was without a mission, but the Navy chose this vessel to be its first aircraft carrier. She was renamed USS Langley and served as an aircraft carrier from 1922 until 1936, when she was converted to a seaplane tender and recommissioned with the same name. As a carrier, Langley trained many of the United States Navy's early carrier pilots.

Langley briefly fought in World War II, serving in the Philippines, but on 27 February 1942, she was attacked by nine twin-engine Japanese bombers and so badly damaged that she had to be sunk by her escorts. Prior to her sinking she also was used as an aircraft transport.
