It may be one of America's most frequently misspelled city names, and is--in fact--a misspelling of the original Spanish name!! But Albuquerque is New Mexico's largest and most populous city and has a history dating back to the Conquistadors in the 16th and 17th centuries.

The city takes its name from the Spanish Duke of Alburquerque, thus the nickname "Duke City." Either way, it takes a fair amount of practice to spell the city's name correctly and even some residents have a little trouble with it.

Albuquerque is home to the University of New Mexico (Lobos) and Kirtland Air Force Base, one of several birthplaces of the Atomic Age. The Rio Grande River flows through Albuquerque on its way from its source in Colorado to Texas and eventually the Gulf of Mexico, and the city is overlooked by Sandia Peak.

It is also one of the cities on the historic "Route 66."
