The kangaroo rat is the animal that can go the longest without drinking water. The kangaroo rat makes its home in Death Valley, the lowest and driest area in the United States. Death Valley desert is located in eastern California, near the Nevada border. The lifespan of the kangaroo rat is 3 to 5 years and it can go an entire lifetime without drinking one sip of water. Kangaroo rats get moisture from the seeds they eat. This animal is not related to the kangaroo or the rat family. They are related to gophers and beavers.

A human can only last a few days without drinking water depending on the ambient climate. Dehydration has serious effects and, untreated, can lead to death. In a desert area, a human could probably not survive longer than four days without water.

There are a few animals that can survive for varying periods without drinking water. Many people think that the camel can last the longest without drinking water, but that is incorrect. A camel can survive up to 15 days without water.

Giraffes drink little as they get a lot of liquid from plants they eat. They can survive without water even longer than camels.

The koala bear can also survive a while without drinking water, but nothing beats the kangaroo rat.
