On December 7, 1941 during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, a bomb dropped hit the powder magazine and detonated sending the ship with 1,177 crew members to the bottom of Pearl Harbor where it had been docked as part of the Pacific Fleet to deter the Japanese imperialism in that part of the world. While parts were salvaged off of the ship, the damage was considered too irreparable to be salvaged. On May 30, 1962 a memorial was dedicated to the ship and crew which remains there to this day.

Built in 1910 and named after the 48th state in the union, the USS Arizona was the last of the Pennsylvania class of "super-dreadnought" battleships and was commissioned in 1916 by President Wilson, but was not sent to war in Europe during World War I. Stationed at Long Beach, CA, the Arizona helped rescue people lost at sea during an earthquake in 1933. The Arizona was also featured in a movie starring Jimmy Cagney "Here Comes the Navy."
